Nwoya Farmers Association: Boosting Yields with Drag Hose Irrigation in Gulu
In the fertile plains of Nwoya District near Gulu, farmers are embracing smarter irrigation methods to improve productivity and reduce their dependence on unpredictable rainfall. One of the standout solutions in use is the drag hose irrigation system—a flexible, efficient, and cost-effective way to water crops over large areas.
This project, spearheaded by the Nwoya Farmers Association and supported by Avantgarde Distributors, is transforming how water is delivered to fields—ensuring better crop health and higher yields.
What is Drag Hose Irrigation?
Drag hose irrigation uses a high-pressure pump system connected to a long, durable hose that can be manually dragged or reeled across fields. It allows farmers to irrigate:
Large plots of land quickly
Row crops like maize, beans, or groundnuts
Orchards and cash crops where overhead systems aren’t practical
This system is ideal for rural areas like Nwoya, where infrastructure may not support fixed irrigation but water sources (like rivers, tanks, or boreholes) are available nearby.
Benefits Seen by Nwoya Farmers
Through this initiative, local farmers are reporting:
More consistent harvests despite dry spells
Reduced labor costs compared to manual watering
Increased efficiency in time and water use
Fewer crop losses due to drought stress
This solution is especially valuable in Northern Uganda, where semi-arid conditions demand innovation and resourcefulness in agriculture.
