As part of the Kitemu Water Project, these wells tap into the shallow water table to provide consistent, year-round access to water—crucial for the health and productivity of mango orchards in this semi-urban agricultural hub.

Why Shallow Wells Are Ideal for Mango Farming

Mango trees thrive with deep, periodic watering—especially during fruit development. The wells at Kitemu are:

• 10 to 20 feet deep, tapping into dependable groundwater sources

• Cost-efficient, making them accessible for smallholder farmers

• Compatible with solar pumps and gravity-fed irrigation systems

• Low-maintenance and long-lasting with proper construction

By integrating these wells with drip irrigation systems, farmers at Kitemu are now able to optimize water use, reduce waste, and improve fruit yield and quality.
